This idea by Piero Manzoni make him produce a very special piece of art...well 90 of them. They cost their weight in gold, but now a days they are nearly the 200,000 euros. Yes..this post will be shit.

The ninety cans of "Merda d'artista" ("Artist's Shit, content 30 gr., freshly preserved, produced and tinned in May 1961"), were first exhibited in the Galleria Pescetto (Albisola Marina) on 12 August 1961.
Manzoni calculated the value of the ninety cans - all numbered, each with a net weight of thirty grams - in accordance with the daily exchange rates for gold.
Manzoni's cans of Artist's Shit have some forerunners in the twentieth-century art, like Marcel Duchamp's urinal ("Fontaine", 1917) or the Surrealists' coprolalic wits. Salvador Dalì, Georges Bataille and first of all Alfred Jarry's "Ubu Roi" (1896) had given artistic and literal dignity to the word "merde". The link between anality and art, as the equation of excrements with gold, is a leitmotiv of the psychoanalytic movement (and Carl G. Jung could have been a point of reference for Manzoni).

Merda d´ artista.... well for some people this may be one of the greatest art piece ever. And maybe they are right because probably it has a very deep meaning to the artist... but for me, and my point of view i think it is disgusting, I see nothing artistic in this, and i would never buy a piece of art like this EVER. Call me closed minnded but i just don´t like it, I think is funny though!

Well so here we could clearly see that well, art is really revolutionating because well art conception for me in a moment was only cool or weird paintings, real music masterpieces, but I would ever ever think of Shit as art, but well the world is always evolving.

Well, for me, this is not in fact it is so disgusting. Maybe many people like it very much and the ones that like this "type of art" will do everything they can and can´t do to buy it. I would never buy this "art" because it is a shit of someone else (disgussting) and it is too expensive (i don´t have that amount of money). Many people can find it funny, or other people couldn´t belive this type of art exist, some people like it and some don´t. I mean this hole thing was a really crazy idea andi really cant believe that he created this hole thing. i think this is very nasty, because in my opinion to have "merda d´artista" is your house is not to have a piece of art like a paint. And i like the thigs that are simple and original but i think that the simple thigs that are famous just because a famous artist created is not atractive. i also head one time that art can´t be reproduce because the artist can make it only ones and i understand that this artist can do is aot and alot of times but for me is losing the originality. i also think is discusting because as we say one day in class this is getting like fertilazing and imagine to try to open to show it to some one alse, imagine what is going to happen.

I think this is really disgusting and I wouldn't buy a can of poop just because comes from an artist. I would never imagine this poop would be called art and I don't think you would like to have that in your house decorating like any painting or sculpture or say like:"Hey did you see this new piece of art I bought it is shit from an artist". I also don't know why something you do every day is so expensive by the fact that someone recognized did it, it's like when they buy in e-bay the used tissues of some singer or whatever but that it's not called art it is gross. I can get the idea or the reason why he did and he has a point, he is right with what he wanted to express but he expressed it in the most disgusting way he could. This definitely shows that the ones who bought it are the kind of consummers that buy everything they see even if it isn't beautiful or useful in any way.

We all know that art can come in different presentations and it depends of what the artist want to share with the people. for me this work goes beyond what most of the people could take as art, it could be confusing if you want to analyze this piece of shit as a piece of art because it could be taken as art if you think about the artist's intention which i don't really agree with but anyways it transmits or it can make you feel different kind of emotions when you see this piece of shit but I think there are better ways of trying to get people's attention and create art. The idea of this, apart maybe, from telling people how foolish they are, was according to some information in the internet: The novelty of Manzoni is in making connections to a reflection on the role of the artist in the self-referential of the work of art.

Maybe he was trying to combine the nature of what we do by instinct and what we can create.
The message is what matters, not literally the poop itself. So if I see this as a message for the community, either trying to show how can the body be connected to the art, or either trying too show the community how foolish they are, then it is a really great idea. I still would never buy it, I woudnt like to have a tin with poop inside it. I like the meaning it has, but not the content of the can..

also i recommend you to look for something my father told me he saw in a festival in Morelia, it's a surrealist piece of art that the magic of it was that it was just a giant cube of hair, just hair wrapped around hair, he really made an effort in making his art (even though he won nothing).
